Made In The USA Monday candle-lite

Posted on | July 26, 2010 | No Comments

Candle-Lite Manufacturing Quality Candles in the USA since 1840
From their website:
Candle-lite’s roots go back to the year 1840, when an English settler by the name of Thomas Emery traveled door to door selling candles and numerous other household items.
His venture continued to grow and eventually, his son Thomas Jr. and his wife Mary furthered the expansion by moving the candle manufacturing facility to the Cincinnati, Ohio suburb of Mariemont.

The company was known then as “The Emery Candle Division of Emery Industries.”

The Emery Family maintained control of the business until 1952 when Al Levinson and John Margo purchased the candle business, renamed the company “Candle-lite”, and moved the entire operation to Leesburg, Ohio.
In 1972 Candle-lite was acquired by Lancaster Colony Corporation of which it remains a division today. Candle-lite division offices are located in Cincinnati, Ohio, with its expanded 900,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant, warehouse and distribution center still in the village of Leesburg.

Alt Daily Creating and celebrating local culture in Norfolk and all of Hampton Roads.

Stolen from their website:
AltDaily: Hyper-local, Ultra Independent

AltDaily strives to be the independent alternative for news, arts, and culture in the Hampton Roads area. Every article and blog is locally focused (hyper-local if you will). Why? Because there’s enough going on in this area to fill a web magazine, and the 757 deserves it.

We are also ultra-independent, which means AltDaily is not corporately affiliated. There is no parent company that also sells dog food. There is no publisher with a fake tan and a Porsche who makes us kill stories because he’s friends with the fat cat we burn in the headline. We believe deep in our souls that democracy can only function properly in a society with a strong free press. While being a counter-balance to industry and government is a lofty goal, we nakedly aspire toward it.

DIY Moss Terrarium Kit
This kit includes:
1. Sand for drainage
2. Activated charcoal
3. Moss
4. Soil mix
5. Natural river rock
6. Instructions

Moss is so easy to grow and so very forgiving. Just a little mist every few weeks in an enclosed terrarium should keep the balance right.
In an open terrarium-a nice misting every few days keeps things green and lush.

Since there are a number of shipping restrictions on natural items-this cannot be shipped outside of the United States.

Meatless Monday

Posted on | July 19, 2010 | No Comments

From the Meatless Monday Website:
Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.

Green Bean Potato Salad

This picnic staple has a rustic feel, because it features tender new potatoes which can be eaten whole. Fresh dill and tangy mustard kick the flavor up a notch, while snap peas and green beans add a refreshing crunch. This recipe comes to us from Tony of Real Men Eat Green.

Serves 6

* salt, for preparing the water
* 5 cups new or nugget potatoes, left whole or cut in half
* ½ cup snap peas, trimmed
* ½ cup green beans, trimmed
* 1 tablespoons mustard
* 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
* 2 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
* 1 cup egg free mayonnaise substitute
* 1 cup celery, chopped
* salt and pepper, to taste
* a pinch cayenne pepper*

*optional

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the potatoes to the pot and boil until for about 10-12 minutes, or until tender when poked with a fork.

Add the snap peas and green beans to the pot and cook them with the potatoes for another 2-3 minutes, or until they begin to become tender, but still keep their crunch.

While the potatoes and peas are cooking, whisk together the mustard, vinegar, dill and mayonnaise substitute. Stir in the chopped celery.

Drain the potatoes, green beans and peas and place together in a large bowl. Toss the vegetables with the mustard dressing until thoroughly coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Taste again for seasoning and add some additional chopped dill or cayenne pepper if you like your potato salad slightly spicy.

Made In The USA Monday-Skilcraft

Posted on | July 19, 2010 | No Comments

From Wikipedia:
Skilcraft is a trade name of the National Industries for the Blind, an organization created by the Wagner-O’Day Act of 1938 to create employment opportunities for blind Americans. Products bearing the Skilcraft brand are commonly used in United States federal government institutions, including the United States Postal Service. They are also commonly sold in U.S. military base exchanges.

In 1938, President Roosevelt signed the Wagner-O’Day Act which directed the government to purchase products manufactured by blind Americans. In 1971, Senator Jacob Javits introduced legislation extending the act to severely handicapped individuals. Today, known as the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act, this legislation is implemented by The Committee for Purchase from People who are Blind or Severely Disabled, an independent federal agency. The Committee for Purchase has designated the National Industries for the Blind (NIB) and NISH to be the two central, non-profit organizations which coordinate government acquisitions from hundreds of independent organizations for the blind and severely handicapped.
